the oral history project
The Oral History Archive
The archive is meant to serve the Israeli public, documenting one of the most dramatic periods in its history. It is also aimed particularly for scholars and activists concentrated on democratic erosion and the rise of populism, wishing to learn from the Israeli case study; and for scholars studying Israel, wishing to understand the rift in Israeli society and politics in recent years, and the processes leading to/following the October 7th massacre.
The Narrators
The movement’s oral history archive will present the voices of various organizers active within the movement – representing different “branches”, backgrounds, and political/social aspirations – demonstrating the multifaceted nature of the movement, which reflects on the diversity of Israeli society itself.
The Israeli Protest Movement
In the past year and a half Israel has been going through one of the most dramatic and tumultuous periods in its history. Ever since its current right-wing government rose to power in November 2022 and more specifically, since it declared in January 2023 its wish to reform the judicial system – in a way that will in fact cancel all checks and balances on the government – there have been protests and various disruption activities throughout the country. This became the largest protest movement in Israeli history and one of the most persistent in recent global history.
